The executive committee of the City of Montreal has awarded an exceptional grant of $650,000 to Brique par brique, an organization that aims to build 31 off-market housing units for families and singles in the borough of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension. This contribution is in addition to the transfer of land from the city to the organization.

The project will be built at 8600-8618, avenue de l'Épée, in the Parc-Extension district. This commitment allows the project to move towards confirmation of all its financing. A $541,900 grant from the Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension borough's Inclusion Fund has also been awarded in 2021 for Brique par Brique's non-market housing project.

“Faced with the housing crisis, the City of Montreal is confirming a portion of the funding for a project that is essential to providing Montrealers with suitable, affordable housing. Consolidating non-market housing in central neighbourhoods, close to public transit routes, is a priority for our administration in order to maintain a real social mix,” emphasized Benoit Dorais, vice-president of the Ville de Montréal's executive committee and responsible for housing, real estate strategy, property assessment and legal affairs.

“It's excellent news that the project led by Brique par brique can move forward. Since 2016, this organization's involvement in the community fabric of Parc-Extension has been indispensable. We all need to work together to find innovative, local and concrete solutions to the housing crisis, and Brique par Brique is there to help,” said Laurence Lavigne Lalonde, Mayor of the Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension borough.

This project represents a further step towards achieving the objectives set by the City of Montreal, in conjunction with its housing partners, of building 120,000 housing units over 10 years and achieving a 20% proportion of non-market housing units by 2050, in order to ensure the long-term affordability of its housing stock.

To achieve these objectives, the City of Montreal has put in place a series of robust measures to enable the metropolis to house more Montrealers, focusing on the construction of new units and the protection of existing affordable units. Improved administrative processes, enhanced support for NPOs to accelerate the construction of social and affordable housing, and higher densities are at the heart of the means used by the Ville de Montréal to respond to the housing crisis. These measures will provide concrete, tailored responses to the recommendations of the Chantier Montréal abordable, set up by the Ville de Montréal to bring together the driving forces in housing, from both the private and community sectors.
