The City of Montreal is moving ahead with the redevelopment of Notre-Dame Street East, in Vieux Pointe-aux-Trembles, starting next spring.

While the project aims to replace or extend the lifespan of century-old underground infrastructures, the city is seizing this opportunity to redevelop Notre-Dame Street East, between 1st and 13th Avenues, to make it a modern, complete and dynamic living environment. This major redevelopment will include the widening of sidewalks, enhancing pedestrian comfort and safety, while contributing to commercial vitality by providing space for terraces.

The project includes:

  • underground burial of the electrical and telecommunications network;

  • replacement of street lighting and traffic lights;

  • installation of new street furniture;

  • reconstruction of the street ;

  • reconstruction and widening of sidewalks;

  • reconstruction and rehabilitation of sewer and water mains;

  • replacement of lead service entrances.

Measures to adapt to the impacts of climate change

The new rue Notre-Dame Est will also be significantly greener, with the planting of nearly 300 trees and shrubs and over 2,300 perennials. These new plantings will not only make the artery more beautiful and user-friendly, but will also help reduce heat islands.

In order to make the city more resilient to the impacts of climate change, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall, the project will also incorporate sponge-like features in the form of drainage projections.

“Our underground infrastructures are aging, and it is essential to rehabilitate or replace them to continue offering quality services to the population. Rather than rebuilding from scratch, we're taking advantage of this opportunity to transform Notre-Dame Street East, in Vieux Pointe-aux-Trembles, into an artery better adapted to today's reality. The street will be greener, safer and offer more user-friendly and accessible public spaces,” said Émilie Thuillier, Chair of the Executive Committee and responsible for human resources, infrastructures, buildings and asset maintenance.

“The long-awaited redevelopment of rue Notre-Dame Est in Vieux Pointe-aux-Trembles will transform our neighborhood, making it more welcoming and dynamic. In addition to rebuilding the street and widening the sidewalks to accommodate terraces, we're going to green the public spaces considerably with numerous plantings, as well as burying the electrical wires, which will magnify the urban landscape. This redevelopment is a major step forward in improving the quality of life in our borough and supporting local development. This project is a continuation of our investments in the area in recent years, reinforcing our commitment to revitalizing Vieux-Pointe-aux-Trembles as a heritage and commercial destination,” added Caroline Bourgeois, Mayor of Rivière-des-Prairies - Pointe-aux-Trembles.

Work is scheduled to start next spring, with completion scheduled for fall 2026. To minimize the impact on the population and commercial activities, the work will be carried out in different phases.
