Concerned about making life easier for Montreal families, Projet Montréal intends to save them $1,100 per year during its second mandate.
The leader of Projet Montréal, Valérie Plante, and the incumbent mayor of Ahuntsic--Cartierville, Émilie Thuillier, explained that these savings will be achieved through :
- A 50% reduction in STM fares for 12 to 17 year olds, from $54 to $27 per month. For a family with two teenagers, this represents an annual savings of $648;
- The differentiated rate for which Projet Montréal wants to implement for residential municipal taxes. For a middle-class family, this represents an annual savings of about $452.
The differential tax rate will give a tax reduction to middle-class homeowners by shifting some of the residential tax burden to the most expensive homes.
The differential tax rate for small businesses has proven to be very effective. Buildings under $750,000 have benefited from tax reductions of 16% over the past 4 years. No less than 90% of businesses have benefited from this measure.
