The areas around our schools should never be racetracks or shortcuts for drivers in a hurry.

That's why Projet Montréal has been working since the start to make our neighbourhoods safer. Over the past few years, we've made the surroundings of more than a hundred schools safer by installing traffic lights, curb extensions, one-way streets and speed bumps. Thanks to us, over 50,000 children can now enjoy a safer journey to school.

Unfortunately, these measures alone are not enough. In some areas, the use of photo radar is the only way to ensure the safety of students and their parents near our schools. That's why Projet Montréal is urging the Quebec government to give municipalities the power to install photo radar.

So far, the Quebec government is the only one with the power to install photo radar. And yet, in Montreal, your local elected officials know better than anyone the high-risk intersections and sectors on their territory. Photo radar is therefore a welcome addition to the measures already in place to make our schools safer.

In Montreal, there are only 8 photo radars. We've asked Quebec City for the authority to install at least 300 of them, to make the areas around schools, seniors' residences and the most dangerous intersections safer.

The effectiveness of photo radar has been proven. MTQ experts have noted a 37% reduction in collisions in urban areas where fixed photo radars are installed, and the percentage of vehicles exceeding the speed limit drops from 59% to 13% where photo radars are deployed. And it's a measure widely accepted by the public: 94% of Quebecers surveyed with a driver's license support the use of photo radar in school zones.

So, what is Quebec waiting for? Let's push the government to give cities the power to install photo radar near our schools. Sign to show your support!
