The City of Montreal is pleased to announce a winter program packed with free and low-cost activities for all tastes, to be rolled out over the coming months across the metropolis.
“Numerous outdoor and cultural activities, both indoors and outdoors, are planned for everyone's enjoyment. Our neighbourhood parks, large parks and nature parks, our libraries and Maisons de la culture await families, as do many other municipal facilities,” points out Ericka Alneus, responsible for culture, heritage, gastronomy and nightlife on the Executive Committee.
“No matter what the weather, we have everything we need to make winter fun for young and old alike. Refrigerated skating rinks, like the one on the Esplanade Tranquille or the one in Parc du Mont-Royal, as well as activities such as hiking or fatbike riding in the nature parks, will even get you ahead of the winter fun. And all year round, rain or shine, the five Espace pour la vie museums open their doors to visitors of all ages. We guarantee that red cheeks and smiles will be on the faces of those who enjoy them,” says Caroline Bourgeois, Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee, responsible for sports and leisure, Espace pour la vie, the French language and the East End of Montreal.
Free activities in libraries and Maisons de la culture
More than a hundred free workshops are held in libraries to entertain youngsters, from bingo to games and science experiments. Click here to consult the workshop calendar.
The Maisons de la culture also suggest a range of activities for all ages: films, youth and adult theater, musical performances and exhibitions. Ticket reservations are required for some activities. Detailed schedule here.
A variety of activities at Espace pour la vie
The five Espace pour la vie museums (the Biodôme, the Biosphère, the Insectarium, the Botanical Garden and the Planetarium) offer a wide range of fun and educational activities. Visitors can learn about wildlife, the environment, insects, flora and space. It's worth noting that privileged access to all five museums is available for one year, thanks to the Space for Life Passport.
Available in digital format at a very affordable price, the passport offers a number of advantages for families, adults, students and nature enthusiasts. To find out more about these museums and their programming, visit espacepourlavie.ca.
Varied cultural programming and entertaining indoor activities
When the weather's not so kind, you can stretch your legs by taking a dip in one of our neighborhood pools, skating in one of our arenas or visiting the TAZ Skatepark. At La TOHU, you can borrow a Finnish bowling set and a giant chess set.
Enjoy nature in our Montreal parks
Nature parks and large parks offer afternoons with a wide range of activities. The program includes winter forests, birds and mammals, snow taffy tastings and educational sessions on maple syrup production.
Visitors can also take part in active games and instructive hikes where they'll learn how to light a fire, track animals and use binoculars. These activities are designed to enrich participants' knowledge of nature and provide moments of outdoor fun.
Outdoor physical activities
Free outdoor physical activities are available all winter long, including skating on the refrigerated and non-refrigerated outdoor rinks, skiing, walking and fatbike riding, as well as sliding on the mounds. For people with reduced mobility, a loan service for adapted equipment is available in certain nature parks and large parks.
