The City of Montreal is awarding $6.6 million to 2 organizations for the construction of 90 housing units for women in difficulty in Montreal's Sud-Ouest borough. Residents and their children are expected to move into the units this fall.
Habitations Libr'Elles and Logifem will receive $4.1 million and $2.5 million respectively, corresponding to 40% of the funding obtained under the Affordable Housing Program Québec (PHAQ) of the Société d'habitation du Québec (SHQ) for the construction of the 2 buildings. In return, the 2 organizations are committed to maintaining affordable rents for a period of 35 years.
"These investments are representative of our commitment to creating new community housing units. We are proud to actively contribute, with our various partners, to the preservation and creation of housing to meet the needs of the population. The construction of new housing units is a concrete response to the complex problem of the housing crisis. I can't wait for these projects to see the light of day, so that they can bring relief to women in difficulty and their children, who are looking for housing without breaking the bank", declared Benoit Dorais, vice-president of the executive committee, responsible for housing, real estate strategy, property assessment and legal affairs at the City of Montreal.
"These units will provide a safe roof over the heads of these women and their children at an affordable and sustainable price, while allowing them to have all the local services found in this central Montreal neighbourhood. We are proud to be able to act to guarantee a better quality of life for these 90 women and their children," added Despina Sourias, associate councillor for housing, sanitation and protection of the rental housing stock on the executive committee of the Ville de Montréal.
