Starting in winter 2024-2025, the Ville de Montréal is announcing a significant optimization of snow removal operations at landings for people with reduced mobility. This follows a review of its practices and service standards in this area.

After a snow depth of 5 cm, more than 400 landings for people with reduced mobility will benefit from specific snow removal contracts.

Operations will be carried out on a continuous basis, and must be completed no later than eight hours after the end of the snowfall. A budget of over $200,000 will be used to implement this service as of winter 2024-2025.

This optimization, to the satisfaction of the Ombudsman de Montréal, is the result of collaboration between the City, its 19 boroughs, the STM and the Ex aequo organization.

“Snow clearance is a direct and important service for the population, whatever the mode of transport. Improving snow removal at landings for people with reduced mobility was a necessity, and I'm delighted that the solution identified with the boroughs has been so well received by Ex aequo, an important partner of the City,” said Maja Vodanovic, responsible for consultation with the boroughs and water on the executive committee.

“Optimizing snow removal activities will inevitably have a positive impact on the quality of life of Montrealers with reduced mobility. It also marks a major step towards better universal accessibility. We have listened to the needs of people with reduced mobility and we are proud to present these improvements that will meet their expectations,” added Josefina Blanco, who is responsible for diversity, social inclusion, universal accessibility, the status of women, youth and seniors on the executive committee.

“The new rules for snow removal from landings for people with reduced mobility represent a major step forward for people with disabilities. The city can count on the collaboration of Ex aequo for its implementation,” concluded Marie Turcotte, general manager of Ex aequo.
