Determined to ensure the vitality of commercial arteries in all of Montreal's neighborhoods, in 2023 the City of Montreal launched a funding program to support and encourage commercial sectors located outside the Sociétés de développement commercial districts.
Between now and March 2025, 14 projects will be deployed in almost as many boroughs. They will receive up to $150,000 in financial assistance for a maximum investment of $2 million. The project selected in Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve will revitalize the commercial fabric of Tétreaultville, through four initiatives:
- Installation of various summer features (street furniture, ground and sidewalk art);
- Public events to energize the commercial heart of the district;
- Promoting local merchants and local purchasing in the district;
- Supporting and attracting new entrepreneurs.
"Local businesses play a crucial role in the economic vitality of the metropolis and the quality of life in its neighbourhoods. Many commercial arteries are located outside the territories of the Sociétés de développement commercial, and it was important for our administration to offer them greater support. Thanks to this project in Tétreaultville and the 13 others that will be completed between now and next year, concrete improvements to the commercial experience will be visible," declared Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.
"I'm delighted that the Tétreaultville Merchants Association's project has been selected and will be able to take advantage of the program aimed at supporting commercial arteries outside SDCs. Thanks to this project, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a livelier and more pleasant Hochelaga Street. Local merchants will certainly be able to attract new customers, and the Tétreaultville commercial sector will benefit from renewed vitality. I invite Montrealers to come and discover this unique commercial sector in eastern Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve," added Alia Hassan-Cournol, associate councillor for economic development, commerce and design on the Ville de Montréal executive committee and councillor for Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
"Since 2018, the borough has supported the Association des commerçants de Tétreaultville for multiple projects, and we've been key partners in propelling it forward. In 2024, we're continuing to contribute to the area's growth by continuing our financial support to the ACT, but also by starting work on a new public square that will become the heart of this beautiful neighborhood. The funds announced today will revitalize the entire street and boost the efforts of local merchants and entrepreneurs," continued Pierre Lessard-Blais, Mayor of the Borough of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
