The City of Montreal is announcing an ambitious goal to add 11,000 public access points for electric vehicle charging in the Greater Montreal area by 2030. This action is part of the City's Climate Plan and aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, for which transportation is 30% responsible, while facilitating access to charging for electric vehicles.

"Considering that 30% of GHG emissions are caused by transportation in Montreal, we want to make it easier for people to choose active mobility and electric vehicles. With a better supply of electric charging stations, we want to make these mobility options more accessible and support the transition to sustainable mobility. We are proud to accelerate the implementation of infrastructures that will facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles by Montrealers," declared Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.

Investments and deployment

Montréal will be deploying new levers to improve the supply of charging solutions on its territory:

  • the installation of additional municipal public charging stations;

  • the funding of a program to help Montreal businesses and institutions electrify their fleet of light and heavy vehicles;

  • the electrification of Bixi stations.

Closer collaboration with the private sector

The target of 11,000 charging points will be achieved by deploying charging stations throughout the agglomeration, including linked cities. Charging stations will be located at curbside, in parking lots accessible to the public and on private property accessible to the public. Montreal will be looking for incentives and collaborations to encourage greater private-sector participation in the provision of public charging solutions, for example via parking lots owned by Montreal businesses, such as gas stations and grocery stores, for the benefit of their employees, customers and the public.
