The city of Montreal is unveiling its Montreal Water Strategy 2025-2034, which represents its commitment to the future of this essential resource over the next decade.

The result of a process of reflection with partners and public consultation, this new strategy has been designed to address the major issues affecting the Greater Montréal area: responsible use of the resource, adaptation and resilience, environmental protection and intergenerational equity.

The Montreal Water Strategy 2025-2034 is structured around five orientations, 16 objectives and 14 commitments.

Orientation 1: Reduce wastage of drinking water to encourage responsible use by minimising drinking water losses, encouraging the use of non-potable water and reducing excessive use of drinking water.

Orientation 2: Ensure access to and the security of a high-quality drinking water supply by protecting raw water sources, reducing the risk of disruption to drinking water supplies and preserving drinking water quality.

Orientation 3: Reduce the impact of rainfall on the community and the environment by favouring run-off into the natural environment, improving the resilience of the built environment to heavy rainfall and continuing to improve the drainage network.

Orientation 4: Reduce the quantity and variety of contaminants in wastewater and stormwater by minimising contaminants at source, reducing the risk of untreated wastewater being discharged along riverbanks, improving the quality of effluent discharges from wastewater treatment plants, and reducing and reclaiming residual materials.

Orientation 5: Achieve a sustainable and equitable balance in financing the needs of water management by improving long-term business needs planning, limiting the growth of water management costs and ensuring the sustainability of revenues.

"Water is essential to the functioning of our city. Our new Montréal Water Strategy, which is the result of a major citizen mobilisation, will enable us to better meet current needs, face the challenges ahead and ensure that future generations have a supply of high-quality drinking water that is accessible to all. It is our collective project and our most important legacy," said Maja Vodanovic, the elected member of the Executive Committee responsible for water.

The Strategy is consistent with the Montreal Climate Plan and the Montreal Strategic Plan 2030, both of which commit the city to accelerating the ecological transition.
