Montreal, August 24, 2025 – Projet Montréal leader Luc Rabouin and Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve mayoral candidate Alia Hassan-Cournol announce adjustments to the borough’s waste collection schedule. The team is proposing an improved approach that addresses concerns raised during constructive discussions with residents. Projet Montréal is committed to restoring weekly collections during the summer and maintaining the collection schedule for the rest of the year.

"For me, it is essential that Montreal's management take into account the experience and opinions of the population. This measure to space out collections is effective and has proven itself, but we have learned that it cannot work the same way everywhere, especially in a dense neighbourhood. That is why we will proceed gradually, taking into account the opinions of the residents of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve," added Luc Rabouin, leader of Projet Montréal.

Commitment to consultation and adaptation

Luc Rabouin took the opportunity to reaffirm that this decision is in line with the renewed Projet Montréal team's desire to work closely with the public.

"What defines my commitment as an elected municipal official is my proximity and attentiveness to the residents of my neighbourhood. This is the style of leadership I want to bring as borough mayor. We have heard the concerns of citizens, and it is essential to be agile. It remains important for us that extended collection intervals remain in place for most of the year, as this measure has positive and concrete effects, but it now seems clear that the summer period poses more challenges. That is why we will make adjustments to ensure the cleanliness of public spaces during this critical period," said Alia Hassan-Cournol, candidate for mayor of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

A local choice for a sustainable future

Both candidates also emphasized that this revision is part of a comprehensive approach to make the city greener, more sustainable and more user-friendly. “We are committed to always seeking a balance between achieving our environmental goals, such as reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills, and maintaining cleanliness and quality of life in our neighborhoods. One cannot exist without the other,” said Luc Rabouin.

The team is also committed to stepping up its cleanliness efforts by doubling the number of cleaning crews and expanding their territory, setting up a special anti-litter squad, and improving borough communications to raise public awareness of the best techniques for managing compost and waste.
