Montreal, August 25, 2025 – On the eve of the new school year, Projet Montréal leader Luc Rabouin has committed to installing photo-radar devices in front of all elementary schools in Montreal to better protect children and to reinvest all proceeds in new road safety measures.

In a context where collisions remain too numerous, despite accelerated safety efforts in recent years, Projet Montréal believes it is necessary to strengthen the arsenal of tools available to protect pedestrians, especially children.

" Photo-radars save lives. Where they are installed, there has been a 42% reduction in collisions. However, Montreal has only eight devices for its entire territory. This is clearly insufficient to adequately protect our children on their way to school. We know our communities better than anyone else, and we are asking Quebec City to give us the means to protect our children, our seniors, and the entire population," said Luc Rabouin, leader of Projet Montréal.

As the start of the school year approaches, Mr. Rabouin reiterates the urgency of taking action. "Projet Montréal has invested heavily in making our streets safer, and more than 120 schools have been protected over the past five years. But the reality is that there are still too many collisions. Every year, children are victims of collisions on their way to school or the park. This is unacceptable. As parents, we should never have to fear for our children's safety when they walk. To put an end to this, Montreal must have the freedom to install speed cameras where they are most needed," he added.

Beyond the physical improvements made by the City, photo-radars remain an essential complementary measure to reduce speed and increase safety.

“Projet Montréal has always made it a priority to make school zones safer. That's why we are committed to reinvesting every dollar collected by photo enforcement cameras in concrete measures to make our streets safer,” concluded Luc Rabouin.
