On March 15, Projet Montréal members will elect the party's next leader. Members will cast their vote by preferential ballot.
What is preferential voting?
Preferential voting is a proportional voting system that allows you to express an order of preference for the proposed candidates. You will be asked to rank the candidates on your ballot from 1 to 5, with 1 being your first choice and 5 being your last choice.
Once the votes have been counted, if a candidate has been chosen as the first choice by at least 50%+1 of the members, that person wins the vote.
If no person receives 50%+1 of the votes, the person with the fewest votes is eliminated. All this person's votes are then redistributed: the second choice of those members who voted first for the eliminated candidate becomes their first choice.
Once the votes have been redistributed, if no candidate has obtained 50%+1 of the votes, the same exercise is repeated until one candidate obtains the majority.
